SEGA puts “Sonic’s DNA” inside a ¥3.3 million anniversary figure

Share

Sonic’s latest collectible comes with something unusual inside its chest. Behind a transparent panel, a green Chaos Emerald holds synthetic DNA designed to represent the character himself.

Created with Japanese science collective LOM BABY, the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG DNA FIGURE marks the character’s 35th anniversary. The project takes a familiar expression, a character’s “DNA,” and gives it a physical form.

The smaller, made-to-order edition costs ¥3.3 million. That price places it firmly in the world of luxury collectibles, while the material inside supplies the story behind it.

Giving Sonic’s identity a physical form

LOM BABY brings together artists, engineers and scientists. For this collaboration, the collective designed and synthesised DNA using information about Sonic’s defining characteristics.

The idea connects the character’s appearance, personality and abilities to the material held inside the sculpture. His identity becomes something the object contains as well as something its shape expresses.

Here, “Sonic’s DNA” describes synthetic material created for the project. It represents a fictional character through biotechnology and art.

That distinction matters to the creative idea. The collectible invites fans to imagine owning a physical expression of what makes Sonic recognisable, extending their connection with the character beyond his outward appearance.

A Chaos Emerald becomes the centrepiece

The figure’s reflective chrome finish changes Sonic’s familiar appearance while keeping his silhouette immediately recognisable. His pointed ears, swept-back quills, oversized shoes and gloved hands remain clear.

Against that silver surface, the green Chaos Emerald draws attention to his chest. It gives the DNA a visible home within the sculpture and makes the central idea easy to show in photographs.

The design encourages a closer look. From a distance, it reads as a polished Sonic figure. Move closer, and the transparent section introduces the detail that makes this anniversary edition different.

From a Tokyo exhibition to a numbered collectible

The project began with a life-size figure unveiled at SEGA STORE TOKYO in Shibuya PARCO on June 23, 2026, Sonic’s 35th anniversary.

The retail version brings the concept down to 25 cm. Each figure has a serial number, with a resin body and an acrylic display base.

Reservations are scheduled to close on November 1, 2026, with release planned for January 2027. Shipping is charged separately.

The anniversary provides a fitting setting for the idea. After 35 years, Sonic’s appearance and personality are familiar enough to become the subject of the collectible itself. SEGA and LOM BABY give fans a new object through which to examine that identity, with a Chaos Emerald holding its symbolic core.
