Duolingo stole Apple’s iPhone Duo launch with one very obvious joke

Share

Apple finally entered the foldable phone market with the iPhone Duo. Samsung immediately started taking shots at it.

Then Duolingo noticed something much simpler.

Apple had just named its biggest new phone after Duo, the green owl that has been terrorising people into finishing language lessons for years.

Within hours, what should have been another round of Apple versus Samsung brand banter had a third participant. And somehow, Duolingo became the funniest part of the launch.

Apple called its first foldable the iPhone Duo

The name gave Duolingo everything it needed.

As the Apple event unfolded, the brand started posting in real time.

Then came the panic.

“It’s called the iPhone WHAT???”

“Oh god oh god my SEO my SEO.”

Duolingo even tagged Apple CEO John Ternus asking him to pick up the phone.

Soon after, it posted an image of Duo folded inside an iPhone with the line, “they named a phone after me and made it bend over.”

Duolingo x Apple Event

The joke did not need a campaign concept or a complicated visual system. Apple had already done the setup by choosing the name.

Samsung joined and accidentally made it better

Samsung was already using the launch to remind everyone that it had been making foldable phones for years.

So when Duolingo started complaining about Apple, Samsung Mobile US joined the conversation.

A few posts later, Duolingo softened the insult and asked Samsung not to break its app on Galaxy phones.

That exchange pushed the joke beyond Apple’s naming coincidence. Duolingo had walked into one of tech’s longest-running marketing rivalries and started roasting both sides.

Duo became the unofficial third brand at the Apple event

The smartest part was how little Duolingo had to manufacture.

Duo is already the name of its mascot. Apple happened to launch a foldable called Duo. Samsung was already waiting to attack Apple for entering a category it has been competing in for years.

Duolingo simply connected the two.

Its posts also stayed completely inside the personality people already expect from the brand. Dramatic panic. Fake legal concern. SEO jokes. Petty insults. Then a selfie from Duo with the caption, “phone was dead. why is everyone calling me.”

The iPhone Duo launch gave Apple a new product.

It gave Samsung another chance to troll Apple.

And it gave Duolingo an entire marketing moment without launching anything at all.
