Chameleon Video: Jacob & Co matched three watches to a real chameleon

Share

A real chameleon walks across three Jacob & Co watches. As it reaches each one, its skin changes to match the yellow, green and red gemstones.

That simple transformation became Jacob & Co’s most-viewed social content. The Chameleon Video generated more than 50 million views across Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube Shorts.

The film turned a product display into something people wanted to watch twice.

A living guide to the collection

The video featured three versions of the Jacob & Co Caviar Tourbillon. Each watch contains a flying tourbillon and more than 400 invisibly set baguette-cut gemstones.

The collection includes watches covered in diamonds, rubies, tsavorites and coloured sapphires. Therefore, colour already played a major role in the design.

Jacob & Co gave those colours a natural companion.

The chameleon begins moving across a clean surface with the watches positioned along its path. When it reaches the yellow watch, its skin takes on a similar shade. It then changes to green and finally red as it approaches the corresponding pieces.

The animal guides viewers from one product to the next. Meanwhile, the transformation creates anticipation around every watch.

There is no detailed explanation or complex narrative. The jewellery, movement and changing colours communicate the idea immediately.

The chameleon was real

The production used a real chameleon in a controlled environment. Expert handlers were present to protect the animal and keep it comfortable during filming.

Capturing the right movement required patience and several takes. The animal needed to follow a path that aligned naturally with the position of each watch.

The team then enhanced the colour transitions during post-production. The adjustments made each transformation clearer while keeping the overall image believable.

That balance became part of the film’s appeal. Viewers debated whether the colour changes were completely real or digitally created. As a result, the question encouraged people to replay the video and examine each transition.

The visual effect also remained connected to a genuine characteristic of the animal. Chameleons can change their appearance, so the enhanced transitions felt like an extension of something viewers already understood.

One short film reached 50 million views

Jacob & Co released the video on Instagram in December 2024. The brand then distributed it across TikTok, X and YouTube Shorts.

Luxury influencers, entertainment accounts, fashion pages and meme accounts reposted the film. Consequently, it reached people far beyond the usual audience for high-end watches.

The video passed 50 million views across platforms and received millions of likes, comments and shares. It also delivered Jacob & Co’s strongest social engagement for a single piece of content at the time.

The campaign attracted new followers and encouraged discussion around both the watches and the colour-changing effect. It later received recognition in the Use of Viral Content category at the 17th Annual Shorty Awards.

The film achieved that reach without depending on dialogue. Its visual idea could be understood in any country and on any platform.

Why the visual travelled

The video gives viewers two details to follow at the same time. One is the chameleon’s changing appearance. The other is the craftsmanship inside the watches.

Each colour shift reveals another version of the Caviar Tourbillon. Therefore, the animal’s movement also works as a product demonstration.

The clean set keeps attention on the gemstones. Close photography captures the texture of the chameleon alongside the hard, reflective surfaces of the watches. That contrast gives the film its distinctive look.

Most importantly, the video creates curiosity within its opening seconds. Viewers quickly understand that another transformation is coming, but they still want to see how it happens.

Jacob & Co did not separate entertainment from the product. The watches gave the chameleon its colours, while the chameleon made those colours worth watching.
