British Airways turns rainy-day puddles into an invitation to find winter sun

British Airways is using one of the most familiar sights of a wet British winter to encourage people to think about their next holiday.

Its outdoor campaign, “Puddles,” photographs everyday life through reflections in standing water. Created by Uncommon, the series pairs these rainy scenes with a simple line: “It’s always sunny somewhere.”

The idea connects the weather people are experiencing with the possibility of travelling somewhere warmer.

A different view of rainy Britain

Each photograph captures a scene reflected in a puddle, with an aircraft appearing in the grey sky.

The water becomes the device that brings street life and air travel into the same frame. Viewers see a familiar setting from an unusual angle, with the plane offering a small suggestion of a journey beyond it.

That gives the campaign a visual connection to flying without relying on a conventional photograph of a beach or resort. The promise of sunshine comes through the words, while the image stays close to everyday British life.

Finding beauty in the weather

Photographer Daniel Benson at Making Pictures shot the series using an unscripted reportage approach.

The photographs focus on wet streets and people continuing with their day. Their appeal comes from noticing reflections and details in an environment that commuters might otherwise pass through without much thought.

This treatment gives the work a recognisable mood. Rain supplies both the subject and the means of photographing it, making the creative idea feel rooted in the season.

A timely reminder about winter holidays

The campaign’s timing builds on a seasonal travel pattern. According to British Airways, colder weather, shorter days and grey skies bring an annual increase in winter sun searches and bookings.

“It’s always sunny somewhere” turns that familiar desire into a short, accessible message. It invites viewers to imagine a different forecast while leaving the destination open.

For an airline, the combination creates a direct link between a present experience and a possible next journey.

Reaching travellers at London stations

“Puddles” is running across digital six-sheet screens at London railway stations, with media placement handled by MG OMD.

The setting places the work in front of people already making a journey. A photograph of rainy daily life can meet a commuter in a similar moment, making the suggestion of a sunnier trip particularly relevant.

The campaign also continues British Airways’ use of photography in outdoor advertising, following its earlier “Reflections” work.
