Aldi makes room for broomsticks in its Halloween car park

Share

The parking sign looks familiar until you read who it is for. Beneath the usual “P” and Aldi logo, it announces “Broomstick Parking” for witches and wizards only.

At Aldi’s Water Lane store in York, a small section of the car park has become a place to leave magical transport. A wooden rack holds a collection of broomsticks, while a white broom silhouette on the ground marks the space.

Announced on October 22, 2026, the Halloween installation remains in place until October 31. Delivered by Taylor Herring, it gives the supermarket a seasonal attraction before shoppers reach the entrance.

An ordinary parking sign carries the joke

The installation borrows the practical details of a real parking facility. There is a designated area, a rack for the vehicles and a sign explaining who can use it.

Low wooden fencing surrounds the bay, with pumpkin decorations placed near the front. The broomsticks stand upright at the far end, making the space look occupied by shoppers who have already gone inside.

That attention to everyday details makes the fantasy easy to understand. Aldi treats arriving by broomstick as another transport choice to accommodate.

The sign does much of the storytelling. Its familiar format makes the unexpected wording the point of discovery, while the broom graphic explains the idea from a distance.

York gives the idea a local connection

Aldi chose a city that topped its own poll of Britain’s most haunted places. In the supermarket’s survey of 2,000 Brits, 28% named York as the place they believed was the most haunted.

The finding supplies a local reason for the installation. A parking bay for witches and wizards feels connected to the city’s spooky associations, giving the seasonal joke a specific setting.

For shoppers, the setup also offers a straightforward photo opportunity. The sign, rack and ground graphic put the entire idea into one scene that can be understood without a long explanation.

The Halloween shop starts outside

The launch supports Aldi’s Halloween range, extending the occasion from the products on its shelves into the space outside the store.

Its research also found that 83% of respondents felt Halloween had become too expensive in recent years. That gave the supermarket a value message to place alongside the playful attraction.

The parking bay brings those parts together through the shopping trip itself. Visitors encounter the seasonal display on arrival, then head inside for the food, treats and decorations associated with the occasion.

Aldi has given a routine piece of supermarket infrastructure a temporary fictional purpose. For a few days, even a witch arriving to buy Halloween essentials has somewhere clearly marked to park.
