Samsung found the Tim Cook it needed for the Galaxy Z Fold8 launch

Share

“You can quote me, Tim Cook from Palmerston North.”

Samsung New Zealand published that line on 10 September 2026, one day after Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo. The Tim Cook delivering it was a resident of Palmerston North, not the Apple figure viewers expected.

He had a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 in his hands and a product review ready. One real name allowed Samsung to join the biggest technology story of the week without mentioning Apple directly in the film.

Palmerston North gave the name a second meaning

The film introduced its presenter as Tim Cook from Palmerston North, a city on New Zealand’s North Island. Samsung made the distinction clear, but only after the name had already caught the viewer’s attention.

The accompanying line read, “Tim Cook has an announcement. And for once, it’s about Galaxy.”

Samsung never claimed that this was Apple’s Tim Cook. The full introduction was right there. The audience supplied the connection before Palmerston North completed the joke.

That local detail also made the idea feel more believable. This wasn’t an actor playing a fictional executive. Samsung had found a real person with the right name and introduced him at the exact moment that name was dominating technology news.

Apple’s iPhone Duo supplied the timing

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on 9 September 2026. It was the company’s first foldable iPhone and placed Apple directly alongside established foldable devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold8.

Samsung had introduced the Fold8 series in July, with general availability beginning in August. Apple’s September announcement created a fresh reason to talk about it again.

Samsung New Zealand released the Tim Cook film the following day. The timing changed a simple customer review into a response to Apple’s launch.

The phrase “switch to Galaxy” carried more weight in that setting. It sounded like a standard phone-switching message, but the presenter’s name gave it another reading. Samsung could truthfully say that Tim Cook had moved to a Galaxy device.

The product review kept the joke believable

Tim Cook delivered the film like a conventional technology presenter. He described the Galaxy Z Fold8 as compact when folded and large when opened. He also highlighted its AI photo-editing tools by creating a new profile picture.

The product details gave him a reason to be on screen beyond the name. His review covered the basic appeal of a foldable phone while quietly building towards the final signature.

His closing line completed the campaign without needing another explanation. Samsung had secured a positive Galaxy Z Fold8 review that could genuinely be attributed to Tim Cook.

The campaign also connected with Samsung’s wider response to Apple entering the foldable category. Global messaging welcomed Apple to foldables, while the New Zealand film found a smaller and more personal way to join the conversation.

A product launch, a real name and a one-day response window came together in a film that could only have appeared at that moment.
