McDonald’s Just Right billboard matched McCafé drinks to the weather

Share

McDonald’s turned the daily temperature into a simple product recommendation with “Just Right,” a digital outdoor campaign for McCafé.

The billboard used live weather data to display the current temperature alongside a suitable McCafé beverage. As the temperature changed, so did the drink. Hotter conditions brought colder options onto the screen, while cooler weather made a warm McCafé drink feel more appropriate.

Instead of showing one fixed product throughout the day, the campaign allowed the environment to decide what people saw.

A billboard that reacted to the moment

Weather can quickly influence what someone wants to drink. A warm coffee feels inviting on a cold morning, while an iced beverage becomes more appealing when the temperature rises.

“Just Right” brought that familiar decision into the billboard itself. The screen pulled real-time weather information and used it to select the most relevant McCafé drink for that moment.

The execution remained visually simple. People could see the temperature, recognise the featured beverage and understand the connection almost immediately. There was no lengthy message to read or complicated interaction to complete.

This made the billboard useful as well as promotional. It did not simply tell people that McCafé offered several drinks. It helped them imagine which drink they might want right now.

One creative idea with several possible versions

Digital outdoor displays made it possible for the campaign to adapt without changing its central design. The temperature acted as the trigger, while McCafé’s menu supplied the different creative options.

As the day became warmer or cooler, the featured product could change automatically. The billboard therefore remained relevant across different times and conditions.

This approach also gave McDonald’s a natural way to present the range of McCafé beverages. Each drink appeared in a context where it made sense, rather than being placed together in a crowded product lineup.

The weather became part of the media plan, the message and the product demonstration. It gave every variation a clear reason to appear.

Why the idea felt just right

The campaign worked because it connected a changing outdoor condition with an immediate consumer choice. People already notice the temperature when deciding what to wear, where to go and what to order. McDonald’s simply placed McCafé inside that existing behaviour.

The name “Just Right” captured the idea neatly. It suggested that there was a McCafé drink suited to every temperature and every moment.

The execution also showed how live data can support a straightforward creative idea. The technology stayed in the background. Viewers only saw a timely suggestion that felt relevant to their surroundings.

Although the billboard could change throughout the day, its message stayed consistent: whatever the weather, McCafé had a drink that matched it.
