Koleston Naturals let the sunset colour a billboard model’s hair

Koleston Naturals created a billboard that changed throughout the day without screens, sensors or digital effects.
Installed beside the coast in Lebanon, the outdoor execution featured a woman whose long hair had been removed from the printed image. The opening allowed the real sky behind the billboard to fill the empty silhouette.
As the daylight changed, so did her apparent hair colour.

A cut-out replaced the model’s printed hair
The visual showed a close-up portrait of a woman with the shape of her flowing hair cut directly out of the billboard.
Instead of printing one permanent colour inside that space, the campaign left it open. The sea, clouds and sky visible through the cut-out became part of the model’s appearance.
During brighter hours, her hair appeared blue or blonde. Around sunset, it shifted into shades of yellow, orange and red. After darkness arrived, the same silhouette became considerably deeper and almost black.
The billboard therefore appeared to present several hair colours while using only one physical installation.

The location completed the advertisement
The billboard was positioned on a promenade with an uninterrupted view of the sea and skyline behind it.
This placement was central to the idea. The changing coastal light provided the colours, movement and variety that the printed design deliberately left missing.
The surrounding area was regularly used by people walking, exercising and visiting nearby cafés. Viewers could encounter a different version of the billboard depending on the time they passed it.
Rather than treating the location as a surface on which to place an advertisement, Koleston Naturals made the environment responsible for completing it.
Nature demonstrated the product promise
Koleston Naturals promoted hair colour made with natural ingredients. The billboard translated that positioning into a visual experience by allowing nature to colour the model’s hair.
No lengthy explanation was required. The changing sky created a direct connection between natural colour and the product’s range of shades.
The execution also acknowledged that hair colour does not appear identical in every setting. Light can make the same shade look warmer, brighter or darker during different parts of the day.
By allowing those changes to happen naturally, the billboard demonstrated variation more convincingly than a row of printed colour samples could.
The billboard changed without digital technology
Many responsive outdoor campaigns depend on digital screens, live data or mechanical systems. Koleston Naturals achieved its transformation through a carefully positioned opening.
The material removed from the billboard became as important as the image that remained. Its negative space turned the sky into an active part of the composition.
This simplicity allowed the idea to be understood immediately. A viewer only needed to see the woman’s portrait and the landscape filling her hair to understand how the execution worked.
The campaign showed that contextual outdoor advertising does not always require complex technology. Sometimes the most effective interaction comes from designing around something already present.
The work became an enduring outdoor reference
Created in Lebanon by Leo Burnett Beirut, the campaign was originally known as Natural Colors Change and has also been widely described as the Sunset Hair billboard.
The execution received the Outdoor Grand Prix at the 2008 Dubai Lynx Awards. Years later, it continues to circulate as an example of environmental media and location-specific design.
Its impact came from bringing product, message and placement into one visual. The billboard did not simply claim that Koleston Naturals offered changing, natural-looking colour. It allowed the sky to demonstrate it.
