Burger King invited the scary clowns in for a Whopper

A boy cycles through a neighbourhood at night and notices a clown following him. As he heads towards Burger King, more clowns appear. The scene has the ingredients of a horror film, until the pursuers reveal what they actually want.

“I want my Whopper.”

Burger King’s “Scary Clown Night” turned that reveal into a Halloween invitation in 2017. People arriving at participating restaurants dressed as clowns could claim a free Whopper, under the line “Come as a clown, eat like a king.”

Created by LOLA MullenLowe Madrid, the campaign combined a seasonal costume idea with a recognisable dig at McDonald’s and its clown mascot.

A horror chase ends with a food order

Directed by Rodrigo Cortés, the film follows the cyclist as an unsettling encounter becomes a pursuit by a crowd of clowns.

One resembles Ronald McDonald, making the competitive reference easy to spot. The others broaden the scene into a Halloween gathering, with different costumes joining the journey towards the restaurant.

The ending changes how the audience understands the chase. The clowns have a destination and an appetite. Burger King becomes the place they are all trying to reach.

That reversal gives the promotion its story. The film builds fear around the same costumes that the offer then asks customers to wear.

The costume becomes the entry requirement

The US promotion ran on October 31, 2017, from 7pm until closing at selected restaurants in five metropolitan areas: Miami, Boston, Los Angeles, Austin and Salt Lake City.

The offer was limited to the first 500 guests in clown costumes at each participating location. Burger King also encouraged people to post their outfits using #ScaryClownNight.

Those details gave the invitation a clear action and reward. Customers needed to dress the part, turn up at the right restaurant and claim their burger.

The resulting scene also carried the campaign idea into the restaurant. A room full of clowns eating Whoppers could communicate the joke as clearly as the film.

A rival’s symbol becomes Burger King’s guest

The campaign arrived in the year of the film It, when scary clowns were a prominent Halloween reference. Burger King connected that cultural moment with a character already associated with its competitor.

The outdoor work extended the provocation. According to the campaign’s art director, billboards were placed near McDonald’s restaurants in participating cities.

The creative team records a rollout across 35 countries, making this a broader activation with local promotion arrangements.

Its central line held those executions together. A clown could belong in a horror story, a Halloween costume party or a rival’s advertising. Burger King gave all of them another role: a customer coming in for a Whopper.
