A burger appeared as a stapler on Good Fortune Burger’s Receats menu

Ordering a Basic Steel Stapler from Good Fortune Burger meant receiving a burger. In February 2021, the Toronto restaurant introduced Receats, a temporary menu that gave familiar food the names of office supplies.

The idea played with a detail that followed every delivery order. The product name appeared on the receipt. Rename lunch after something bought for a home office, and the paperwork could tell a different story.

Receats arrived during pandemic restrictions, when working from home had brought office equipment and takeaway meals into the same space. Good Fortune Burger carried that overlap into its ordering menu, with burgers, sides and drinks listed as supplies for the working day.

A burger, fries and a drink became an office shopping list

The Fortune Burger appeared as a Basic Steel Stapler. The Double Your Fortune burger became an Ergonomic Aluminum Laptop Stand, while the Diamond Chicken Burger was listed as a Mini Dry Erase Whiteboard.

The renamed selection also included a Wired Earphones with Mic option for the Emerald Veggie Burger and a Silicone Keyboard Cover for a build-your-own burger.

Sides and drinks completed the fictional shopping basket. Classic fries became a Braided HDMI Cable, parmesan fries appeared as a CPU Wireless Mouse, and Coca-Cola took the name Non-Slip Rubber Mouse Pad.

The food kept its familiar identity beneath the office vocabulary. Customers were buying a meal, with the campaign supplying an alternative name for each part of the order.

The menu appeared on Uber Eats and DoorDash, putting the joke inside the delivery services customers already used. Someone could encounter Receats while choosing lunch and take part simply by selecting one of the renamed items.

GF Office Supply Co. carried the joke onto paper

The campaign extended to physical receipts issued under the fictional name GF Office Supply Co. That supplied an office-store identity to accompany the renamed products.

A receipt usually records what a customer has bought. Here, its wording became part of the promotion. The joke continued after checkout, when a burger order could read like a purchase for a desk.

Good Fortune Burger introduced the idea through organic Instagram posts. The menu and paperwork gave people something concrete to share, and the campaign prompted both amusement and questions about submitting food purchases as work expenses.

Jon Purdy, the restaurant’s operations lead, described the intention as giving people something to laugh about. Reimbursement remained the campaign’s comic premise, with no guarantee that an employer would approve an order.

Receats belonged to that particular moment in home working. It brought the objects on a desk and the food beside it into one imaginary shopping list, then printed the joke on the receipt.
