Domino’s called its pizza box The Original Foldable after Apple’s phone launch

When Apple introduced its first foldable phone, Domino’s France responded with a product that had already been folding for years.

The Original Foldable presents the ordinary Domino’s pizza box as a piece of advanced technology. Created by agency Foolish, the campaign recreates the precise visuals and dramatic language of smartphone launches before revealing that its impressive new device contains a pizza rather than a screen.

A pizza box became a piece of advanced technology

Domino’s boxes arrive at restaurants as flat pieces of cardboard before being folded into a three-dimensional form. They can then be opened, closed and carried while protecting the pizza inside.

The campaign treats these familiar actions like technological achievements. Carefully composed close-ups show the cardboard bending along its lines, individual sections locking together and the completed box taking shape.

Clean backgrounds, controlled lighting and precise editing make the process resemble a premium product demonstration. Every fold is presented as though it were the result of years of engineering.

Once the box opens, the reveal replaces the expected flexible screen with a pizza.

The films copied the seriousness of a tech launch

The short videos borrow the visual conventions used to introduce new electronic devices. Detailed product shots focus on construction, functionality and design while giving the box a level of attention it rarely receives.

The joke works because the language of technology advertising can make even a simple physical movement sound revolutionary. Folding becomes a feature, cardboard becomes engineering and different pizza-box dimensions become a range of available sizes.

Domino’s does not need to explain the comparison directly. The styling immediately suggests a smartphone launch, while the pizza delivers the punchline.

The closing line, “The Original Foldable,” allows the brand to claim that its packaging was performing the same basic trick long before flexible phones arrived.

Domino’s reacted while the technology story was fresh

The campaign appeared on social media shortly after Apple’s presentation. That timing allowed Domino’s to enter an existing conversation without needing to create a complicated connection between pizza and technology.

Instead of commenting on the phone itself, the brand identified one familiar word from the launch and made it relevant to its own product. “Foldable” could describe a new device, but it could also describe every pizza box assembled inside a Domino’s restaurant.

The quick response gave the work the feeling of a cultural reaction rather than a planned product campaign. Short films also suited the idea because viewers could recognise the reference and understand the joke within seconds.

Familiar packaging carried the complete idea

The campaign does not introduce a new pizza, box or service. Its subject is an object customers have handled countless times.

By changing how that object is filmed, Domino’s turns familiarity into an advantage. Viewers already understand how a pizza box works, so the exaggerated presentation becomes immediately funny.

The box also gives the brand a credible reason to participate in the foldable-phone conversation. Its construction genuinely depends on folding, and its most important feature is still the pizza placed inside.

The Original Foldable shows how reactive advertising can work without forcing a brand into an unrelated trend. Domino’s found a direct connection between a widely discussed technology feature and one of its most ordinary assets, then gave cardboard the kind of launch usually reserved for a flagship device.
