No Ordinary Love: Hinge turned real dating stories into a free audiobook

Share

Hinge has turned five conversations that could have changed a relationship into its first branded audiobook.

The 2026 chapter of “No Ordinary Love” pairs five contemporary authors with five real couples who met through the dating app. Each writer transformed an important moment from the couple’s early relationship into a short story, then narrated it for the audiobook.

Developed with Dazed Studio, the project explores the courage required to communicate honestly while dating. The complete anthology is available free across Spotify, Libby and other listening platforms. Readers can also find the written stories on Substack.

Five Stories About Saying the Difficult Thing

Each story begins with a moment when someone decides to communicate clearly.

In Rufi Thorpe’s “This Is How to Touch Me,” Roisin messages Daniel immediately after their first date. Curtis Garner’s “The Sound It Leaves” follows Oden asking Edward to meet in person after a misunderstanding over text.

Meanwhile, Tembe Denton-Hurst writes about Isabella and Rebecca agreeing to remain friends before changing their minds one week later. Nicola Dinan follows Carty asking Raka to take the relationship slowly, even as their feelings grow quickly.

Finally, Raven Smith’s “Thou Shalt Play It Cool” begins when Michael tells Elena that he went on another date that morning. His honesty starts a larger conversation about exclusivity.

These moments are small enough to feel familiar. However, each one requires a person to risk rejection, embarrassment or judgment. That shared emotional tension connects the five different relationships.

According to Marketing Brew, the theme was partly informed by Hinge’s 2025 Gen Z D.A.T.E. Report, which identified fears of rejection and judgment among young singles.

Audio Carries the Hesitation

The audiobook format gives those conversations space to breathe.

Each author narrates their own work, so the writing arrives with its intended rhythm and tone. Theatre director Joan Sergay guided the performances, drawing on her experience directing more than 200 audiobook titles.

Hunter Harris, who contributed to the 2025 edition, provides the foreword. In addition, the real couples return at the end of their respective stories to reflect on what happened.

The format lets listeners hear pauses, changes in tone and moments of uncertainty. These details matter because the campaign is about gathering the courage to speak. Audio makes the hesitation part of the experience.

The five stories are available through Spotify, Libby, Libro.fm, Apple Audiobooks and Barnes & Noble Audiobooks, with more platforms planned. Hinge has also kept the written versions available on Substack, giving people the choice to read or listen. Hinge’s launch announcement contains the complete anthology and distribution details.

Medieval Romance Meets the Modern Dating App

Short video trailers bring the real couples into a deliberately strange visual world.

Director David Brandon Geeting combined medieval imagery with the style of a 1990s romantic comedy. That mix turns everyday dating questions into moments that feel grand, dramatic and slightly absurd.

The campaign’s wider design follows the same idea. Tattoo artist Lu Walstad created hand-drawn, medieval-inspired illustrations. Meanwhile, harpsichordist Jackson Kinder composed custom music through Pump Comp.

Together, these elements give the anthology a recognisable identity across video, audio, Substack and outdoor advertising. They also bring humour to stories built around emotional discomfort.

The visual style treats a difficult text message or exclusivity conversation with the weight of an ancient romantic quest. That exaggeration captures how significant an ordinary conversation can feel when a new relationship is still uncertain.

The Anthology Keeps Changing Form

“No Ordinary Love” began in 2024 as a collection of stories about overcoming dating pressures and early “icks.” The 2025 edition explored excitement, self-doubt and misunderstandings through alternating perspectives.

For 2026, the platform moves from the page into people’s headphones. Across its three chapters, Hinge has now worked with 16 contemporary authors to retell relationships that began on the app.

The new release will also appear through audio advertising, creator partnerships, podcasts and outdoor placements in New York and London. Real couples are contributing additional voiceovers for TikTok and Instagram.

Results from this chapter are still to come. For now, its strongest choice is the connection between subject and format. “No Ordinary Love” asks daters to speak openly, then builds the entire campaign around the emotional power of hearing those words out loud.
